[lugm.org] OpenSSH is in financial trouble

Corporate donations generally require receipt. If any corporate
entity is interested, let me know, It could be a business writeoff
and a joint press release. I know one of the directors of the OpenBSD
foundation.

now the idea of having corporate members come in play.

As individuals, we cant contribute that much.
But all companies using openssh should be convinced to donate.

Most of us work at some company where openssh is a must, we could try to convince our bosses.

:) set an amount per person how much one is willing to donate, then we can decide on what to donate it to or do a 50/50

OpenSSH isn't in a perfect shape either. The openssh developers
are paying for the development servers from their own pockets.

It's an absurd situation: the most widely deployed service of any
Unix-like system doesn't generate enough money to even be self

sustainable.

Right now, OpenBSD is in the red, and to keeping it afloat helps
make sure some good work will extend to OpenSSH. Ideally, I'd
prefer to buy CD sales from the collected money. However, If

some of you would prefer to have your money go to OpenSSH,
we could split it: CD sales & OpenSSH donation money. What do you
think of it ?

hmm its not about convincing people, its voluntary stuffs, if one wants, one gives, besides :p its not wise to announce that money is needed on a product's front page :D .. imagine the image that this leaks out :).

OpenSSH is deeply related to OpenBSD.

I'll give a concrete example: some years ago, a guy rewrote openbsd's

malloc to make it much more strict, and the OpenSSH developers used
the new malloc to catch bugs that would otherwise go unoticed.

OpenSSH is just a part of OpenBSD. If OpenBSD dies, so does a lot of
potential good work for OpenSSH.

apart from the link you sent us, i see nothing
 on the openssh web site.

Would be hard to convince ppl that way.

OK, I got some updates from thib at . Basically, when donating to

OpenBSD, and some of that money trickles to OpenSSH.

To put this another way, innovations in openbsd, also go in
OpenSSH.

The OpenBSD ppl would prefer CD Sales to support cvs.openbsd.org,

and assure us that OpenSSH will directly benefit from this as well.

I can personally vouch for those CDs, they're really cool, plus you have
some really cool stickers (that you can stick on your laptops like I do ;-)).

Any objections to this ?

The t-shirts have little profit margins for OpenBSD.

CD sales finance cvs.openbsd.org (in other words the infrastructure

and theo's salary).

Donation (money) finances the hackathon (for 1 week, openbsd
meet and work on code, this results in burts of activity in cvs logs).

The CD sales are the problem here. Personally I'd much prefer buying

CD Sales, since hackathons are not really an issue for now, even if they
are given away for conf/meetings. However, I understand that most people care about OpenSSH, rather than OpenBSD. I'my trying to find a good

way to get this going. I'll inform you guys as I get the info I need from
openbsd folks.

Hello,

I  think the LUGM can also donate money, or preferably buy CDs and/or

tshirts to be given away at the incoming Open Source conference.

What do the other members of the committee think?

Yours truly,
Aadil.
